Why Christians Should Be Careful About Using God As Their Reasoning To Oppose Gay Marriage

I know the public’s opinion on the Supreme Court’s ruling has been blowing up our social media feeds. And I had to speak on some of the arguments Christians are using to defend their opinions on the matter:

1. “It’s Against The Will of God.”

It really saddens me that people will stand behind religion/God as means to discriminate against a sect of people.

Once upon a time, Christianity was also used as a tool to opress black people and encourage the institution of slavery.

“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ” Ephesians 6:5

It could also be used as a tool to subjugate women. And it has.

“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.” Ephesians 5:22-23

If you are going to follow the bible and use it as a manual for how to live your life… Then you should follow all of it.

You can’t pick and choose which parts of the bible you want to follow. It’s all or nothing.

Honestly, if we want to split hairs, Jesus eliminated the need to follow the rules, because his only rules were this:  Love your god, and love one another.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35

Christianity, religion, spirtuality… etc. is a tool to bring us closer to God, not separate us from our brethren.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

2. “I don’t want my children to grow up in a world where homosexuality is accepted.”

People are afraid that a world that accepts homosexuality is a world that will corrupt their children.

I hate to break it to you. The world is already corrupt. Have you heard of ISIS? Those are the corruptions you should be upset about. Homosexuals are not exterminating Christians.

Accepting people who are different than us teaches our children the art of acceptance. They need to know their way isnt the ONLY way.

Last time somebody tried to make a unified race/way (cough, Hitler, cough) that didnt end well.

God doesn’t discriminate, neither should we.

When Jesus died on the cross, he didn’t say, “I’m doing this for only the people that don’t sin.” Because that would defeat the purpose of his sacrifice.

We can villianize the sin of homosexuality, but we forget that lust, greed, anger, and even divorce… Those are also sins. Last I checked, homosexuality was not a “deadly sin.” But our pride in our righteousness is as much of a sin as Christians like to make homosexuality out to be.

In conclusion, the government is not there to police our religion. They are there to police our rights: Discrimination is discrimination.
